This is thanks to four new train stations that will be built in the East Bronx that will be connected to the New Haven Line from the New Rochelle Station, allowing commuters from Westchester County to easily commute to these stations, and connect to Penn Station in Manhattan from there, according to Metro-North officials.
A groundbreaking for the new stations in the East Bronx was held on Friday, Dec. 9, Metro-North officials said.
The expansion will provide a "critical second route into Manhattan for the first time ever," through Metro-North service, as well as reduce travel times, according to Metro-North officials.
Westchester County officials praised the new expansion.
"The Penn Station Access project is a win for Westchester's residents who live along the Sound Shore. The creation of a one-seat ride into Penn Station, opening up greater access to jobs, education and health care for the first time ever, will improve commutes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and raise Westchester home values in the process," Westchester County Executive George Latimer said.
"Penn Station Access is the most significant enhancement to our region's transportation infrastructure in a generation, with wide-ranging benefits to our economy, environment, and quality of life," New Rochelle Mayor Noah Bramson said.
As part of the project, Metro-North's New Rochelle Yard will also be upgraded with modern signal, power, and communication infrastructure, Metro-North officials said.
The four new stations in the Bronx will be located at Hunts Point, Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park, and Co-Op City, and will all be accessible to people with disabilities, according to Metro-North.
